about

I wrote this song in the sad winter of 2015 in my living room after a dismal diagnosis for someone I care about. It was also inspired by the delivery of my first very own white wood piano. A humble family sold the piano and a young girl looked sad to part with it. I mentioned that I was sad when the piano I grew up with was given away. Her father immediately bookended my sentiment with a direct and firm statement to his daughter "That is not an invitation to sadness". She nodded. I was in awe of his stop on a dime parenting.

A week later the attack in Paris happened and Antoine Leiris wrote his letter. Everywhere seemed to be pointing to our individual invitations to react to situations.

"This is it" is alluding to the preciousness of what we have in front of us, the fact that we are pulsing and breathing and to breathe it in fresh.

I'm lucky enough to have been able to record this song a year later and share it with this person in current health.

lyrics

Butterscotch schnapps on the piano bench
Rooftops carrying just a little bit of snow
How much time she has we don't know

Little boy plays with a bright green ball
Little boy hands that won't always be so small
How much time we have we don't know
Memories from a moment ago

This is it, this is it
And this is not an invitation to sadness
This is not an invitation for fear
This is not an invitation for sadness
This is not an invitation to tears
x2

Butterscotch schnapps on the piano bench
Rooftops carrying just a little bit of snow
How much time she has we don't know
